POPULATION DATA
As a designated depository for U.S. Census information, the West
Michigan Regional Planning Commission receives the latest population updates
of county and sub-county entities as they become available. Based
on the latest estimates, the Commission develops an official set of population
projections for Allegan, Ionia, Kent, Mecosta, Montcalm, Osceola, and Ottawa
counties.
The current population projections were developed using the 2000 Census figures. The population
data show trends for each community from 1970 through 2000 and projections
for 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2000. The projections are based on an average
of six trends: Percentage changes between 1970 and 2000, 1980 and
2000, and 1990 and 2000; and numeric changes between 1970 and 2000, 1980
and 2000, and 1990 and 2000. The County totals are sums of the individual
communities.
Since the projections are based entirely on trends, care should be used
when using the figures. There are many factors that can influence
the rate of change in any of the communities. The best way to influence
the future population of a community is through planning.
