Population Trends & Projections Ė Ottawa Countyís population increased by 67.8 percent between 1980 and 2010 to reach a total of 263,801 (Table 45).  The Countyís rate of growth was much greater than growth rates for Region 8 or Michigan.  Projections indicate Ottawa Countyís population will continue to grow and by 2030 will reach 369,541.

Population Traits Ė Table 46 compares Ottawa Countyís population traits to the Regionís and the State of Michiganís. Between 2000 and 2010 the Countyís population increased by 10.7 percent to reach 263,801 while the Regionís population increased by 6.0 percent to reach 1,171,404 and the State of Michiganís population decreased by 0.6 percent to reach 9,883,640 during the same period.  The Countyís population under the age of five makes up 6.7 percent of the population, which is between the Regionís amount of 6.9 percent and the State of Michigan figure of 6.0 percent.  Ottawa County has a higher percentage of residents under 18 (26.1 percent) than the Region (25.7 percent) or Michigan (23.7 percent).  The Countyís population 65 and over makes up 11.8 percent of the population, which is lower than the Regionís figure of 11.9 percent and Michiganís figure of 13.8 percent.  The Countyís household size of 2.74 persons per household is greater than the Regionís household size of 2.62 persons per household or Michiganís median of 2.53.  Ottawa Countyís females account for 51.0 percent of the population and males make up 49.0 percent.  The Region has a lower percentage of women (50.4 percent) than Michigan (50.9 percent) Ė and a higher ratio of men than the State as-a-whole.   

 

Racial distribution is also different between the County, Region, and the State of Michigan.  There is a higher percentage of Whites in Ottawa County (90.1 percent) than either the Region (85.7 percent) or Michigan (78.9 percent).  The County has a lower percentage of Blacks (1.5 percent) than The Region (5.9 percent) or Michigan (14.2 percent).  The Countyís percentage of Native Indian and Alaska Native (0.4 percent) is slightly lower than the Region and Michigan (0.5 percent in the Region and 0.6 percent in Michigan).  The County has a higher percentage of Asians (2.6 percent) than the Region (1.9 percent) or Michigan (2.4 percent).  The County has a lower percentage of residents reporting two or more races (2.0 percent) than the Region (2.4 percent) or Michigan as-a-whole (2.3 percent).  Ottawa Countyís percentage of Hispanics or Latinos (8.6 percent) is higher than the Region (8.1 percent) and Michigan (4.4 percent).

In Ottawa County, 90.5 percent of people over 25 have a high school degree compared to 88.9 percent of the population in the Region and 88.0 percent in Michigan.  Additionally, 28.8 percent of the Countyís population over the age of 25 has a bachelorís degree or higher, while 26.1 percent of the Regionís population and 25.0 percent of Michiganís over 25 population has at least a bachelorís degree.  The Countyís Veteranís make up 5.8 percent of the population while the Regionís Veteranís comprise 6.5 percent of the population and Michiganís make up 7.4 percent.

 

Housing Traits Ė Table 47 identifies information about housing in Ottawa County, the Region, and the State of Michigan.  Ottawa County varies from the Region and Michigan, which are very similar to each other.  The homeownership rate in Ottawa County (80.8 percent) is higher than the Region (75.8 percent of the housing units) or Michigan (74.2 percent).  The Countyís percentage of multi-family units (17.4 percent) is lower than the Regionís rate of 18.6 percent or Michiganís figure of 18.0 percent.  Finally, the median value of owner occupied housing in Ottawa County of $161,200 is higher than the Regionís median of $144,870 or the Stateís median of $144,200.

Income and Business Traits Ė Table 48 includes income information and business traits for Ottawa County, Region 8, and the State of Michigan.  Ottawa Countyís median household income of $55,095 is higher than Region 8ís median of $49,369 or Michiganís median of $48,432.  The Countyís per capita income of $25,045 is higher than the Regionís amount of $23,697, but a little lower than Michiganís figure of $25,135.  Ottawa County has a lower percentage of people below the poverty level (8.7 percent) than Region 8 (13.4 percent) or Michigan (14.8 percent).

Table 48 also shows some facts related to business and sales.  In 2007 Ottawa County had 21,445 businesses, which equaled 0.081 businesses per capita Ė which was just a little lower than Region 8 which had 97,331 businesses which equaled 0.083 businesses per capita, and the State of Michigan which had the same ratio as the Region.  When the per capita sales of the various types of businesses is compared between the County, Region, and Michigan it shows that the County does better in Manufacturing Sales ($34,916 in Ottawa County versus $27,601 in the Region and $23,721 in Michigan).  Wholesaler Sales were lower in the County ($8,038 in Ottawa County, $13,615 in the Region, and $10,837 in Michigan) as were Retail Sales ($9,149 in Ottawa County, $11,096 in the Region, and $10,855 in Michigan).  With per capita sales of $1,470, Michigan did better than the Region ($1,252) or Ottawa County ($1,050) in Accommodations.  The County had a better ratio of building permits than the Region or the State of Michigan.  Ottawa Countyís commute time of 19.9 minutes was shorter than the Regionís commute of 21.6 or Michiganís commute of 23.7 minutes.

 

Employment Traits Ė Table 49 shows differences between employment distribution in Ottawa County, Region 8, and the State of Michigan.  In Ottawa County there are 127,930 people over 16 employed in the civilian labor force, In Region 8 this figure is 544,940 and in Michigan the figure is 4,369,785.  Ottawa County has a higher percentage of people employed in Agriculture and related fields (1.9 percent) than either the Region (1.8 percent) or Michigan (1.3 percent).  Manufacturing accounts for 24.1 percent of the Countyís jobs (the Countyís largest category), 20.3 percent of the Regionís workforce and 17.6 percent of Michiganís.

The County also has a similar percentage employed in construction (5.8 percent) as Region 8 (5.8 percent), which are both higher than in Michigan (5.3 percent).  Ottawa County has a similar percentage of workers in Transportation (4.0 percent versus 4.2 percent in Michigan and 3.9 percent in Region 8). Wholesale trade accounts for 3.8 percent in the County, 4.1 percent in Region 8, and 2.8 percent in Michigan.

 

In most of the other categories, the County has a lower percentage than in Region 8 or Michigan.  The County has a lower percentage working in Retail Trade (10.9 percent) than in Region 8 (11.6 percent) or Michigan (11.6 percent) Ė this is the third largest employment category in all three areas.  Information accounts for 1.6 percent in the County, 1.8 percent in Region 8 and 1.9 percent in Michigan.  Finance accounts for 4.9 percent in the County and 5.7 percent in the Region and Michigan.  Professional accounts for 6.9 percent in Ottawa County, 8.1 percent in Region 8 and 8.9 percent in Michigan. Education, Health Care, and Social Services account for 21.3 percent (the Countyís second largest category) of the Countyís workforce, 21.4 percent of the Regionís, and 23.2 percent of Michiganís; Arts, Entertainment, Accommodations, and Food Services account for 7.8 percent of the Countyís workforce, 8.1 percent of Region 8ís and 9.1 percent of the Stateís.  Public Administration accounts for 2.2 percent of the Countyís workforce, 2.5 percent of Region 8ís, and 3.8 percent of Michiganís.

Table 50 shows the unemployment trends for Ottawa County, Region 8, Michigan, and the United States for the five year period between 2007 and 2011.  Ottawa Countyís unemployment rate ranged from a low of 5.6 percent in 2007 to a high of 12.1 percent in 2009 before dropping to 11.0 percent in 2010 and 8.3 percent in 2011.  The Countyís labor force decreased each year dropping from a high of 136,972 in 2007 to 128,196 in 2011.  Ottawa Countyís unemployment rate was similar to Region 8ís for most of the period, lower than Michiganís, and higher than the national average.  Region 8ís unemployment rate ranged from a low of 6.2 percent in 2007 to a high of 11.6 percent in 2009 before it decreased in 2010 to 11.0 percent and again in 2011 to 8.6 percent.  Region 8ís unemployment rate was lower than Michiganís during the entire five year period.  Region 8ís unemployment rate was higher than the National average until 2011 when it dropped below the United Stateís average for the first time in many years.
