Population Trends & Projections Ė Montcalm Countyís population increased by 33.2 percent between 1980 and 2010 to reach a total of 61,266 (Table 33).  This rate of growth was similar to Region 8ís rate of 39.8 percent and much higher than Michiganís growth rate of 6.7 percent.  Projections indicate Montcalm Countyís population will continue to grow and by 2030 will reach 76,805.

Population Traits Ė Table 34 compares Montcalm Countyís population traits to the Regionís and the State of Michiganís. Between 2000 and 2010 the Countyís population increased by 3.4 percent to reach 63,342 while the Regionís population increased by 6.0 percent to reach 1,171,404 and the State of Michiganís population decreased by 0.6 percent to reach 9,883,640 during the same period.  The Countyís population under the age of five makes up 6.1 percent of the population, which is lower than the Regionís amount of 6.9 percent, but a little higher than the State of Michigan figure of 6.0 percent.  Montcalm County has lower percentage of residents under 18 (24.1 percent) than the Region (25.7 percent), but a slightly higher percentage than Michigan (23.7 percent).  The Countyís population 65 and over makes up 14.1 percent of the population, which is higher than the Regionís figure of 11.9 percent and Michiganís figure of 13.8 percent.  The Countyís household size of 2.68 persons per household is a little higher than the Regionís median of 2.62 and Michiganís median of 2.53.  Montcalm County is unusual since it has fewer women than men (48.3 percent women and 51.7 percent men) due in-part to the prison in Carson City.  The Region has a lower percentage of women (50.4 percent) than Michigan (50.9 percent) Ė and a higher ratio of men than the State.   

 

Racial distribution is also different between the County, Region, and the State of Michigan.  There is a higher percentage of Whites in Montcalm County (94.3 percent) than either the Region (85.7 percent) or Michigan (78.9 percent).  The County has a lower percentage of Blacks (2.3 percent) than The Region (5.9 percent) or Michigan (14.2 percent).  The Countyís percentage of Native Indian and Alaska Native (0.5 percent) is similar to the Region and Michigan (0.5 percent in the Region and 0.6 percent in Michigan).  The County has a lower percentage of Asians (0.4 percent) than the Region (1.9 percent) or Michigan (2.4 percent).  The County has a lower percentage of residents reporting two or more races (1.6 percent) than the Region (2.4 percent) or Michigan as-a-whole (2.3 percent).  Montcalm Countyís percentage of Hispanics or Latinos (3.1 percent) is lower than the Region (8.1 percent) or Michigan (4.4 percent).     

 

In Montcalm County, 85.0 percent of people over 25 have a high school degree compared to 88.9 percent of the population in the Region and 88.0 percent in Michigan.  Additionally, 12.7 percent of the Countyís population over the age of 25 has a bachelorís degree or higher, while 26.1 percent of the Regionís population and 25.0 percent of Michiganís over 25 population has at least a bachelorís degree.  The Countyís Veteranís make up 8.1 percent of the population while the Regionís Veteranís comprise 6.5 percent of the population and Michiganís make up 7.4 percent.

Housing Traits Ė Table 35 identifies information about housing in Montcalm County, the Region, and the State of Michigan.  Montcalm County varies from the Region and Michigan, which are very similar to each other.  The homeownership rate in Montcalm County (80.2 percent) is higher than the Region (75.8 percent of the housing units) or Michigan (74.2 percent).  The Countyís percentage of multi-family units (7.5 percent) is much lower than the Regionís rate of 18.6 percent or Michiganís figure of 18.0 percent.  Finally, the median value of owner occupied housing in Montcalm County of $112,700 is lower than the Regionís median of $144,870 or the Stateís median of $144,200.

Income and Business Traits Ė Table 36 includes income information and business traits for Montcalm County, Region 8, and the State of Michigan.  Montcalm Countyís median household income of $39,775 is considerably lower than Region 8ís median of $49,369 or Michiganís median of $48,432, and the Countyís per capita income of $18,569 is lower than the Regionís amount of $23,697 or Michiganís figure of $25,135. Montcalm County has a higher percentage of people below the poverty level (19.0 percent) than Region 8 (13.4 percent) or Michigan (14.8 percent).

Table 36 also shows some facts related to business and sales.  In 2007 Montcalm County had 4,483 businesses, which equaled 0.071 businesses per capita, which was lower than the State of Michigan and the Region (both were 0.083).  When the per capita sales of the various types of businesses are compared between the County, Region, and Michigan it shows that the County has fewer per capita Manufacturing Sales ($6,140 in Montcalm County versus $27,601 in the Region and $23,721 in Michigan).  Wholesaler Sales figures were lower for the County ($1,970 per capita) than in the Region ($13,615) or Michigan ($10,837).  Retail Sales ($8,962 per capita in Montcalm County were lower than the Region ($11,096) and Michigan ($10,855).  With per capita sales of $1,470, Michigan did better than the Region ($1,252) or Montcalm County ($723) in Accommodations.  The County had a lower ratio of building permits than the Region but similar to the State of Michigan.  Montcalm Countyís commute time of 29.8 minutes was longer than the Regionís commute of 21.6 minutes or Michiganís commute of 23.7 minutes.

Table 37 shows differences between employment distribution in Montcalm County, Region 8, and the State of Michigan.  In Montcalm County there are 25,269 people over 16 employed in the civilian labor force, In Region 8 this figure is 544,940 and in Michigan the figure is 4,369,785.  Montcalm County has a higher percentage of people employed in Agriculture and related fields (3.5 percent) than either the Region (1.8 percent) or Michigan (1.3 percent).  The County also has a higher percentage employed in construction (6.7 percent) than Region 8 (5.8 percent) or Michigan (5.3 percent).  Manufacturing accounts for 21.0 percent of the Countyís jobs (the Countyís largest category), 20.3 percent of the Regionís workforce and 17.6 percent of Michiganís.  The County has a higher percentage of Retail workers (13.9 percent) than Michigan and Region 8 (11.6 percent) which is the third largest employment category in all three areas.  Montcalm County has a higher percentage of workers in Transportation (5.0 percent versus 4.2 percent in Michigan and 3.9 percent in Region 8).  Public Administration accounts for 4.4 percent of Montcalm Countyís workforce, 2.5 percent of Region 8ís, and 3.8 percent of Michiganís.  In other categories, the County has a lower percentage than in Region 8 or Michigan.  Wholesale trade accounts for 2.6 percent in the County, 4.1 percent in Region 8, and 2.8 percent in Michigan.  Information accounts for 1.7 percent in the County, 1.8 percent in Region 8 and 1.9 percent in Michigan.  Finance accounts for 7.0 percent of Montcalm Countyís workforce compared to 5.7 percent in Region 8 and Michigan.  Professional accounts for 5.5 percent in Montcalm County, 8.1 percent in Region 8, and 8.9 percent in Michigan.  Education, Health Care, and Social Services account for 20.1 percent (the Countyís second largest category) of the Countyís workforce, 21.4 percent of the Regionís, and 23.2 percent of Michiganís.  Arts, Entertainment, Accommodations, and Food Services account for 6.3 percent of the Countyís workforce, 8.1 percent of Region 8ís and 9.1 percent of the Stateís.

 

Table 38 shows the unemployment trends for Montcalm County, Region 8, Michigan, and the United States for the five year period between 2007 and 2011.  Montcalm Countyís unemployment rate ranged from a low of 11.4 percent in 2007 to a high of 16.1 percent in 2009 before dropping to 15.2 percent in 2010 and 12.3 percent in 2011.  The Countyís labor force decreased over the five year period from 27,049 in 2007 to 25,664 in 2011.  Montcalm Countyís unemployment rate was higher than Region 8ís and Michiganís for the entire period.  Region 8ís unemployment rate ranged from a low of 6.2 percent in 2007 to a high of 11.6 percent in 2009 before it decreased in 2010 to 11.0 percent and again in 2011 to 8.6 percent.  Region 8ís unemployment rate was lower than Michiganís during the entire five year period.  Region 8ís unemployment rate was higher than the National average until 2011 when it dropped below the United Stateís average for the first time in many years.
